A short hike to the inscription on the large rock formation |
Travelling through Montana, we stopped at Pompey’s Pillar National Monument, and learned about the Corps of Discovery’s stay in the area in 1806. Captain William Clark named the site after Sacajawea's son whom he affectionately nicknamed Pomp, and inscribed,
“W.Clark July 25, 1806” high up on the impressive rock pillar that dominates the landscape. We spent the night in a small ‘rustic’ RV park in Terry, MT and looked forward to having hookups for showers in the morning. We awoke to find their water system stopped working during the night, disappointed.
